The Red Beet in Wasilla Alaska is a quaint small, family, homely type place that is all gluten-free. My first visit was a little bit of a let down as I looked at the menu and thought who really eats this stuff? but they focus on fresh, in my opinion yuppie food. Not my forte but I enjoy new things and the fact that they were a gluten-free establishment I wanted to give them a full try. Sadly I went away from my first visit sad, my beet chips were nothing more than red corn chips, that didn’t even look homemade, my sandwich was small and unflavorful and my expensive coffee didn’t even come with refills. the peanut butter cookies were hard and just yucky. But at the end of the visit my friend bought me a raspberry beet juice and I was in heaven. Wow was it good.
Never to judge on a first impression I went back a few months later and ordered differently. I got the potatoes and a meat sandwich. the meat was served on a different bun which was larger and it was good (crumbly but good), the potatoes were yummy and of course I got the beet/raspberry juice and enjoyed it. With this meal I would come back. However I tried some chocolate chip cookies and again was totally disappointed, they were hard and chewy and just not homemade cookie like.
I bake at home and sweets are something I specialize in, okay rather my kids specialize in but I am a darn good eater! and we have at our home mastered sweets that taste like the real gluten things so having what looks to be homemade but tastes like cardboard is disappointing.
But over all, I enjoy the atmosphere (never order coffee, holy cow its over priced) but definitely get the beet raspberry juice. I would make a special trip just for that. and get the potatoes and I recommend the meat sandwich and pass on the homemade goodies unless you don’t cook at home.
Over all rate: Good, but there is a lot of improvement that can be done! I will go back in the future just to see how they have progressed.
