It was my daughter’s birthday party and my oldest wanted to bake cakes in mason jars as a twist but my birthday girl wanted a dirt cake with gummy worms so we combined the two!
We took cheap mason canning jars found at our local Wal-mart. They were pint size. If you get any larger kids will not be able to finish it all. With the Pint size only 2 out of 9 didn’t finish it all at our home. Me, I could have downed two of them but that’s a whole different post!
There is no photo as basically all you saw was chocolate cake in a jar, not appealing for a blog photo but it was fun to eat.
My daughter made my favorite Hershey Chocolate cake (recipe on the back of a cocoa powder can) with the sub of Tom Sawyer Flour for the gluten flour. It was then crumbled into large chunks and layered with chocolate pudding (basic jello brand boxed stuff) mini marshmallows, chocolate chunks and gummy worms. all packed nicely into a mason jar.
As you were eating you would get some of the dry cake then a big spoonful of pudding with cake and maybe a marshmallow, or a chunk of chocolate and then you would be surprised by a worm! It was interesting as each bite gave you this neat experience of taste and no two spoonfuls were the same. I found most of the girls were scraping the sides for more and if they could have they would have licked it clean, I know for one I would have! It was fun and yummy at the same time.
cakes and cupcakes in the jar are a new trend we just upped it a notch to have fun. By the way Christmas is coming up….why not try baking a bunch and giving them out as gifts? Who doesn’t love to get things to eat at christmas time especially yummy chocolate cake.
For those of you with additional allergies like my son, It can be made gluten/dairy/soy free. enjoy life makes chocolate chunks, marshmallows are safe, we made dairy free chocolate cake and pudding and he enjoyed it. I did too! No help with sugar-free on this recipe but hey its something to aim for in the future.
Sounds Yummy!
