My son absolutely adores Ian’s Abc fries but I absolutely hate the price they charge for them. As I was making dinner the other night we had mashed potatoes an idea hit me aside the head…..Once I recovered from the blow I went to work on my idea.
Taking regular mashed potatoes I added an egg and some baby rice cereal (all gluten/dairy/soy free) and made a potato paste the consistency of a stiff cookie dough. I then loaded my cookie spritzer gadget and piped out heart-shaped potatoes blobs. I salted them liberally and placed them in the oven to bake and get a nice crispy brown outside with a tender middle. I am wondering what result deep-frying would bring but for now I decided to keep it healthier with baking.
They were not perfect and they were not Abc’s but they were edible and I hope to play with more shapes. thinking about rolling them into little snakes and folding them up like little pretzel shapes next.
THAT OLD RULE “DON’T PLAY WITH YOUR FOOD” THAT WE ALL GREW UP WITH IS TOTAL BALONEY. I say play with your food and create new things!
Enjoy!
In my Restaurant Managment classes we were taught to “Play with Your Food” and it would come better tasting than anyone would imagne.
I have a few of these books which are always a big hit when people come visting. http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=Play+with+your+food
So go ahead Play with Your Food and enjoy all the fun.
I need some of those books, maybe I could get Indy to eat more! I could never be that creative although next year I am going to carve oranges like jack-o-lanterns….that was pretty cool.
